“The mother art is architecture. Without an architecture of our own we have no soul of our own civilization.”

IDC Project

The IDC is a design competition that the Kent State fourth year architecture students have been taking part in for nearly forty years. The IDC is a comprehensive design project in which teams of two students compete against each other. In 1970, Professor John Flynn began the IDC project in his class. He not only wanted his students to allow for the different building systems, but he wanted them to calculate them as well. At the end of the project practicing mechanical, electrical, and structural engineers were brought in to critique the students. The project today is still the same, except the entire fourth year competes amongst each other. The final project submission consist of a developed drawing set, exterior and interior renderings, a physical model, and systems calculations. This years project was based out of Baltimore, MD. It was a multi-purpose building placed along the historic promenade. Even though my partner and I did not win the competition, we did get an honorable mention from our studio professors. This in itself is still a great accomplishment.
